DIRECT ANSWER

An inventory aging review groups stock by how long it has been owned or available, then adds current selling pace and value. Use age buckets to schedule attention, not to label products automatically. Receipt or lot age is more operationally precise than product creation date when the same SKU has been replenished repeatedly.

What inventory age means

“Age” can refer to several different clocks:

  • days since the product was created;
  • days since the variant became available;
  • days since a unit or batch was received;
  • days since the product last sold;
  • days since inventory exceeded its planned level.

Choose the clock that matches the decision. Product creation date is easy to access but can misrepresent a replenished staple whose current units arrived yesterday.

A useful aging table

For each variant, include:

FieldWhy it matters
SKU and variantDefines the actionable inventory unit
Quantity availableShows exposure
Inventory valuePrioritizes cash impact
Receipt or proxy ageSchedules review
Units sold in recent windowsShows pace and direction
Sell-through rateNormalizes sales against availability
Days remainingEstimates cover at recent pace
Margin or costDefines intervention room
Season/deadlineAdds business urgency

Shopify's inventory reports provide several of these pace measures. Its days-of-inventory calculation uses ending quantity divided by average units sold per day, based on the report's defined period.

Choose age buckets deliberately

A generic 0–30, 31–60, 61–90, and 90+ layout can be a starting point, but buckets should reflect the category. Fresh goods, fashion, furniture, and spare parts have different useful horizons.

Use each boundary to trigger a different review action. If every bucket leads to the same “discount” instruction, the report is not helping judgment.

Prioritize age × value × urgency

The oldest item is not always the most important. Rank aged inventory using:

  • stock value tied up;
  • likelihood of selling before the deadline;
  • expected recovery from an action;
  • storage or obsolescence cost;
  • confidence in the data.

Avoid FIFO assumptions your data cannot prove

If the system does not track unit-level receipt lots through fulfillment, do not claim the exact age of each remaining unit. Label estimates and proxies honestly.

Turn the report into a workflow

Every reviewed row should end as watch, correct data, merchandise, transfer, bundle, markdown, or exit. Record the owner and next review date. A beautiful aging table without decisions merely catalogs the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have an inventory aging report?

Shopify provides inventory reports including sell-through, inventory sold daily, and days remaining. Exact age or receipt-lot analysis may require combining reports, exports, or another inventory system depending on the definition you need.

Is product creation date a good age measure?

It is a useful proxy for launches but weak for replenished products. Receipt or lot age better reflects how long the current stock has been held when that data is available.

What should happen at 90 days?

Use a category-specific rule. Ninety days might trigger a review, but the decision should still consider pace, value, season, margin, and deadline.
