Use a bundle when the slow product has a genuine complementary relationship that creates customer value without obscuring the offer. Use a direct markdown when the product itself needs a clearer lower price. Compare realized margin, inventory depletion, operational complexity, and whether the bundle would unnecessarily discount a healthy item.
Different jobs
A direct markdown changes the customer's price for the slow product itself. A bundle combines two or more related products into one offer, often with a discount or curated value.
Shopify lists clearing old inventory among potential bundle benefits, but a bundle works only when the products make sense together.
| Question | Bundle | Direct markdown |
|---|---|---|
| Is the slow item useful with another product? | Strong fit | Not required |
| Must the lower product price show directly? | Usually no | Yes |
| Could a healthy item lose margin? | Yes | Not if correctly targeted |
| Operational complexity | Higher | Lower |
| Measures demand for slow item alone | Less clearly | More clearly |
When a bundle fits
Choose a bundle when:
- products are naturally used together;
- the offer simplifies a buying decision;
- bundle margin remains acceptable;
- component inventory can be tracked accurately;
- the healthy component is not being discounted without a purpose.
Shopify's first-party bundle documentation notes that bundle availability is derived from component inventory and that bundle price does not automatically update when a component product's price changes. That matters when other price campaigns are active.
When a markdown fits
Choose a direct markdown when:
- the product itself is price-sensitive;
- the offer should appear clearly on its product page;
- no genuine complementary pairing exists;
- the merchant wants to observe response at explicit price steps;
- bundling would complicate fulfillment or reporting.
Calculate the whole offer
For a bundle, calculate the combined cost, discount allocation, gross margin, and component depletion. Shopify explains that bundle discounts allocate to components by weighted price before taxes are calculated on individual components.
For a direct sale price, calculate the effective variant price and possible additional checkout discounts.
Do not hide unwanted stock
A bundle should solve a customer problem, not merely conceal inventory. If the pairing is confusing, the offer can reduce trust and make performance harder to interpret.
Test one variable when learning matters
If the goal is to learn whether a lower price improves the slow product's pace, a direct markdown produces a cleaner observation than simultaneously changing product pairing, placement, and price.
Frequently asked questions
Do Shopify bundles track inventory?
Bundle availability is determined from component inventory. Shopify explains that the limiting component and required quantity determine how many complete bundles can be sold.
Does a bundle price update when a component price changes?
Shopify's Bundles documentation says the bundle price does not automatically update when an included product price changes; the merchant must update the bundle price.
Can discounts apply to bundles?
Shopify supports eligible discount codes and automatic discounts for bundles. Review the parent bundle targeting and discount-combination behavior.
